I’m a big supporter of Obama, I volunteered for him, and I donated money to his campaign. And I’m proud of just about everything he’s been doing as President so far.
But not everything. It seems that the Obama administration is angling to continue warrantless wiretapping of American citizens, as per the EFF’s analysis. It also appears that Obama is maintaining a number of Bush’s policies on detention of foreigners (no longer “enemy combatants”, but treated much the same way nevertheless), see and here. I’m guessing there might be surprisingly convincing reasons why Obama is choosing to do this, but….
It doesn’t matter why Obama is doing this, it’s still wrong. We are a nation of laws, not of men. And so as a ferocious Obama supporter, I just gave the EFF some money to keep fighting this. And I will continue to be a vigilant supporter. Obama never promised he would be perfect, but he did promise to correct course if he made mistakes, and he urged his supporters to call him out. So, President Obama, with all due respect for much of your fantastic work to date, on these issues, you should change course soon. These are battles worth fighting.
